Thousands of officials who have been turned down from a student loan cancellation program will have their cases reviewed by the Education Department as part of a settlement in a lawsuit brought by one of the most major teachers’ unions in the country.
The settlement announced on Wednesday is intended to resolve a 2019 lawsuit accusing the ministry of mismanaging its civil service loan forgiveness program – a troubled initiative the agency is separately working to correct through an overhaul announced last week.
