For National Food Bank Day, consider donating to a food pantry in Greater Hartford – Hartford Courant

In Hartford and Tolland counties, one in nine people are at risk of going hungry, according to Connecticut Foodshare. In Connecticut’s two counties alone, more than 119,000 people are struggling to get enough to eat.

Food insecurity is when a person does not have constant access to food. According to Connecticut Foodshare, in Hartford and Tolland counties, about 41 percent of food insecure people do not qualify for federal benefits such as SNAP because their income may be too high. This is where community food banks come in.

Local food pantries help fill the void when people earn too much for SNAP, but not enough to have consistent access to food.

However, they need the help of the community to do what they do.

If you’re looking to help, consider donating non-perishable items to a local food pantry for National Food Bank Day. Some examples of items needed are peanut butter, jelly, canned fruits and vegetables, pasta and sauce, canned soup, rice, juice boxes, applesauce, granola bars , oatmeal, long-life milk, toiletries and pet food.
